Indian Information Technology Act

Sammarth Kumar

The Indian Government created this act to counter cyber crime. This act was passed in 2000 and amended in 2008. This act provides guidelines to users on how sensitive information is processed, stored and transmitted.

Many states have their own cyber cells, or dedicated cyber police to monitor cyber crime. People can report cyber crimes to this cell.

The IT Act offers legal provisions for electronic data. It identifies various cyber crimes (as discussed earlier), and penalties for violating them.

The Cyber Appellate Tribunal was established to resolve disputes regarding cyber crime.

This act was needed to ensure the safety of Indian citizens online. The act also allows the government departments to file official documents in digital formats.
